If you suspect you have a mental health concern, talk to your doctor. They have heard it all, and though it’s hard, you will feel better that you did.

find a doc

From there, they can talk to you about medication options, if this is something that you would like to pursue. You DO NOT HAVE TO. Take some time and read the side effects carefully. If starting medication, make sure you tell your nearest and dearest so that they can help you in the first few days. Sadly most medications have quite bad side effects for the first two weeks, but most completely go after that time. There are loads and loads out there, so don’t be afraid to go back and ask for a different one. Do not just stop your medication suddenly, it causes significant side effects so talk to your doctor before stopping.

Your doctor will also likely refer you to local talk therapies. These usually include counselling, CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) or group therapy.

talking therapies

Although my doctor recommended that I check out these talking therapies, I actually self-referred online. It was quick and easy to do especially with Trent PTS in Nottingham. They assess you either in person or on the phone to see what kind of therapy might suit you best. I have been through therapy twice, with different practices, both were CBT courses, one building on the last. CBT is all about changing your behaviour, in order to change your thinking, and ultimately your outlook. I haven’t taken part in the other forms of talking therapy, but I know that people have benefited from both counselling and group therapy.

self-referral

The hardest part is staying healthy. It’s so so easy to think you’re fixed and slip back into bad habits. Stay focused and notice your triggers. Here are stories of success from others to inspire you!

Personally, I’d buy one of these lovely reminders …. treat yourself
